Identification Criteria
Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) uses and accepts multiple sources of data in order to seek out and accurately identify students for placement into the AAA/GATE program. In January, students who meet the criteria set by the District are eligible to take the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) or the Naglieri Non-Verbal Abilities Test (NNAT) for second language learners. Parents with students in grades 2nd -10th who have not met the District's screening criteria may choose to register them for a fee-based OLSAT given in February. CUSD students who take the OLSAT/NNAT and do not receive a qualifying score or students who wish to submit a private IQ test score may qualify to be identified through a multiple measures portfolio placement process in May. (Private IQ scores may be considered as only part of the multiple measure portfolio process.) Parents with students who have been previously identified as gifted and talented from other public schools may provide documentation to be reviewed for participation in the AAA/GATE program. Written parent permission is required for all children who meet the criteria to participate in the AAA/GATE program.
