About Our School |

|
Our History
Nestled in the hills in
the residential community of Mission Viejo, Bathgate Elementary School
is the 21st
elementary school built by the Capistrano Unified School District,
opening in the fall of 1994. The school's unique design centers on
an open stage that allows for the integration of student activities with
the natural surroundings of the area. Fanning out from this stage
area are thirty-four classrooms that house 770 students, all open to an
expansive park area that is jointly used by the community and school.
The facility also includes an extensive collection of library books,
two computer labs including
a mobile computer lab with 22 laptop computers and a large multi-purpose
room with an indoor stage.

Named
after Patricia and William Bathgate, whose family originally came from
rural San Juan Capistrano, the school has benefited from the ideals of
the Bathgate family whose goal was to provide students with a model for
community service and support of the educational process. Their
dedication to and support of the school through many hours of volunteer
work, PTA involvement and pioneering programs for gifted students, has
made teachers, staff, parents and students feel accepted, challenged and
stimulated to become life long learners. |

| Our Description |
Bathgate School is unique in
that its teachers were carefully selected for their expertise not only in being
able to provide basic skills to students but also in supporting these core
academic skills through collaborative efforts between the community and
teachers. Staff members take pride in improving their professional skills
by attending numerous inservices and workshops through Capistrano Unified's
Professional Development Academy (PDA) and by pursuing advanced level university
degrees. Last year alone, Bathgate teachers spent over 2,100 hours outside of
school hours taking professional development classes through the District, not
including hours spent in advanced level degree programs. Their
collaborative spirit is evident as teachers articulate within as well as across
grade levels to provide a comprehensive program that challenges all students.
Instruction at Bathgate focuses on meeting the individual needs of students.
Curriculum decisions are made based on data from various assessments, the
District's Capistrano Objective for Reaching Excellence (CORE) and State
Standards. The District and
state standards in reading,
language arts and math provide opportunities for students to master basic
skills, problem solve, make decisions and practice higher level thinking skills.
Bathgate students continue to excel academically and surpass nationwide norms as
well as district averages on the CAT
6 and California
Standard's test. For the last two years, Bathgate students have ranked
among the top Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) schools on the STAR and
CORE Level tests with an Academic Performance Index (API) of 889 for 2002.
Not only are academics emphasized but Bathgate teachers support the belief that
the resilient child is effective in work, play and relationships, possesses
healthy expectancies and a positive outlook, possesses self-esteem and internal
locus of control, maintains self-discipline, and has developed problem-solving
and critical-thinking skills. Bathgate
actively participates in the nationwide
Character Counts! character education program. The program is an
integral part of preparing students for tomorrow's workplace while
nurturing character development, good citizenship, responsibility and
appreciation of diversity. |
| The Bathgate
campus is the social center of the community. The majority of
families walk their children to and from school and linger to catch-up
on school and community news in the shade of the many trees that fill
the campus. After school programs allow children to remain on
campus to play or attend enrichment classes. Students in grade K-5
enjoy the nurturing atmosphere of Bathgate Elementary School. In
these stressful times, our school community has the common goal of
facilitating our students to discover their hidden talents and dreams to
produce well-rounded, ethical children who will become the adults of our
future. |
