CHARACTER COUNTS 2008-09 |
Throughout the year, we focus on a specific trait and work with the
students to define and practice the character traits outlined below.
Bathgate works closely with the City of Mission Viejo to build a
Community of Character.

RESPONSIBILITY |
Responsibility is
doing what you are supposed to do. Responsible people think
ahead, set reasonable goals, control their tempers, and
always do their best. They don’t give up easily, especially
when others are counting on them. Responsible people are
accountable for the consequences of their choices; they
don’t blame others for their mistakes. |
|
October |
RESPECT |
Respect is showing
others that they are valued for who they are, for their
character, not what they look like or what they have. It
means treating others the way you want to be treated, never
insulting or making fun of others who are different in
looks, ability, race, or religion. A respectful person is
polite, does not use bad language, and never hits or uses
violence. |

THANKFULNESS |
Thankfulness is
appreciating what you have, like a school to go to every
day. You can be thankful for people in your life, like
family, friends and teachers! You can show how thankful you
are with your words, or by sharing with others. |

CARING |
As part of our
Character program we will be focusing on the word Caring.
Caring is being kind, helpful and generous to everyone.
Caring people are not selfish; they are considerate because
they always think their conduct affects others. They have
compassion and empathy because they care how others feel and
they are charitable and forgiving. They do good deeds
without expectation of reward. |

PERSEVERANCE |
Perseverance is
the quality of refusing to give up. When something is
challenging, you can persevere and accomplish difficult
tasks. Remember, that when something is easy, anyone can do
it. But with hard work, determination and perseverance you
can reach the highest of goals! |
|
February |
UNITY |
The quality of
unity is when people come together in support of something.
As a school we celebrate our unity through Blazer Spirit
Wear and show that we are proud to be a part of Bathgate
Elementary. There are a lot of organizations and groups that
come together as neighbors, citizens, friends or activists
to support a common goal. |

March |
INTEGRITY |
Integrity is being
honest, fair, keeping promises and being loyal so people can
trust you. People with integrity don’t lie, cheat, or steal.
They have integrity and the moral courage to do the right
thing and stand up for their beliefs even when it is hard to
do so. |

SERVICE |
Service is the
performance of selfless acts, taking action for the good of
another, the school, the community, the nation or the world.
By volunteering and sharing resources, skills, talent and
time, you demonstrate the attribute of service. Do you have
a special talent or resource that you can use to serve your
school or community? |
|
May |
MORAL COURAGE |
Courage is
standing up for what you believe in, despite what others
say. Demonstrating moral courage takes just that courage!
When you see something happening that you know is wrong,
moral courage is stepping beyond your comfort zone to solve
the problem. |
|
June |
CITIZENSHIP |
Citizenship is
doing your share to help your family and make your community
a better place. Good citizens are good neighbors. They
cooperate with others, obey laws and rules, respect the
authority of parents, teachers and others, and they protect
the environment. |
|
July |
FAIRNESS |
Fairness is
playing by the rules, taking turns, sharing, and listening
to what others have to say. Fair people do not take
advantage of others, consider all sides before they decide
and don’t blame others unjustly. |
