Option 1: The University coursework way - CLAD/CTEL coursework is available through various universities. It’s typically comprised of 12 units of coursework. At this time, the university approach does not require that you take an exam.
Note: As of January, the California Department of Education has approved the following university programs for the California Teachers of English Learners authorization.
- California State University (CSU), San Marcos (San Marcos, CA)
- Stanford University (Palo Alto, CA)
- University of Phoenix (statewide, CA)
- National Hispanic University (San Jose, CA)
- Alliant International University (San Diego and Fresno, CA)
- University of California (UC) Riverside, UC San Diego and UC Los Angeles Extension consortium (southern, CA)
It’s highly recommended that prior to taking the university course route, you get clarification about its approval status.
Option 2: The “go straight to testing” way - Teachers have the option to take the CTEL tests without going through classes or by taking prep classes. There are three examinations that make up CTEL: CTEL 1, CTEL 2 and CTEL 3. You can find out about each exam and the fees for each exam at the California Teacher of English Learner website at http://www.ctcexams.nexinc.com.
Option 2a: The “test prep” way: Teachers can participate in test preparation course for each of the CTEL examinations. They are offered either within our district staff development or through OCDE. Preparation courses through CUSD staff development include the Project GLAD 2-day training and provide a review of the information for the exams. There’s no fee for CUSD teachers for this service. Preparation courses through OCDE charge a small fee for each course. To find out more about the OCDE preparation session visit: http://www.ocde.us/clad/default.asp
