Below are the Math Standards Road Maps for the 2008-2009 school year for Kindergarten through Geometry.
These maps are a resource for elementary, middle, and high school math teachers in the Capistrano Unified School District. They reflect the California Math Standards at each grade level and represent where we would like to be in terms of instruction.
The various grade-level textbooks we have adopted are full of information and lessons that are directly aligned to the standards. In order to help teachers steer clear of a page-by-page, chapter-by-chapter math curriculum approach, the Road Maps assist teachers in curriculum planning/mapping so that the majority of the math instruction is spent on teaching the required (and tested), grade-level standards. Some lessons do not address the grade level standards, as they may focus on the previous year's or subsequent year's standards; these lessons, when appropriate, are omitted from the Road Maps.

The Math Road Maps are not how-to-guides, but rather a list of sections that contains content that need to be covered to meet the California Math Standards within each grade level/math course. Classroom teachers will need to determine the appropriate pace at which material is covered and mastered by their students. Differentiating instruction within the classroom to meet the needs of students both below and above grade level is a critical component of effective math instruction.

Some maps have a large number of "review/enrichment/test prep" days throughout and/or at the end of the school year, while others have very few "flexible" days available. Knowing how many "flexible" school days are incorporated into a grade level map is important in the planning process.

If you have questions or comments regarding the math road maps, please contact Dave Chamberlain at 949-234-9265 or djchamberlain@capousd.org .

All kindergarten math teachers may use this map. Teachers will need to determine the appropriate pace at which material is covered and mastered by their students.

Grade 1

All first grade math teachers may use this map. Teachers will need to determine the appropriate pace at which material is covered and mastered by their students.

All second grade math teachers may use this map. Teachers will need to determine the appropriate pace at which material is covered and mastered by their students.

All third grade math teachers may use this map. Teachers will need to determine the appropriate pace at which material is covered and mastered by their students.

Fourth grade math teachers who are not using the Grade 4 (Accelerated) Math Road Map may use this map. Teachers will need to determine the appropriate pace at which material is covered and mastered by their students.

Fourth grade teachers who teach high-achieving math students may use this map. "High-achieving fourth grade math students" is currently defined (starting in Fall 2008) as those students who earn a Grade 3 Math California Standards Test score of 490 or higher (490 is the average Grade 3 CST score of students who qualify for Pre-Algebra in Grade 6). This definition is a guideline, and some students who earn a Grade 3 Math California Standards Test score of 450 or higher may also benefit from this accelerated instruction.

This accelerated math program covers all of the fourth grade math standards, as well as a specific set of connected 5th grade standards. Teachers using this program will need to have access to the 5th grade Houghton-Mifflin math materials throughout the year.

Fifth grade math teachers who are not using the Grade 5 (Accelerated) Math Road Map may use this map. Teachers will need to determine the appropriate pace at which material is covered and mastered by their students.

Fifth grade teachers who teach high-achieving math students may use this map. "High-achieving 5th grade math students" is now defined (starting in Fall 2008) as those students who earn a Grade 4 Math California Standards Test score of 470 or higher (470 is the average Grade 4 CST score of students who qualify for Pre-Algebra in Grade 6). This definition is a guideline, and some students who earn a Grade 4 Math California Standards Test score of 425 or higher may also benefit from this accelerated instruction IF they also scored 490 or higher on the Grade 3 Math CST.

It is expected that many (about 70-80%), but not all, of those students who earned a Grade 3 Math CST score of 490 or higher and a Grade 4 Math CST score of 470 or higher, will qualify to enroll in Pre-Algebra in sixth grade next year. Students will qualify to enroll in Pre-Algebra in sixth grade by either (1) scoring 20 or higher on the Math Challenge Test and scoring 500 or higher on the Grade 5 Math California Standards Test, OR (2) scoring 27 or higher on the Math Challenge Test and scoring "Advanced" on the Grade 5 Math California Standards Test, OR (3) scoring 36 or higher on the Math Challenge Test. Parents must be informed that placement into an accelerated Grade 5 math program does NOT guarantee their child's placement into the Grade 6 Pre-Algebra math course.

This accelerated math program covers the 5th grade math standards which are not addressed in the fourth grade accelerated program, as well as many, but not all, of the sixth grade standards. Teachers using this program will be provided the sixth grade Houghton-Mifflin Practice and Reteach materials for use throughout the school year.

Participation in the fourth grade accelerated program is not a prerequisite for participation in the 5th grade accelerated program, however, those students enrolled in a regular fourth grade math program who participate in the accelerated 5th grade math program will need to review previously-covered 5th grade standards.

Sixth grade math teachers who teach Middle School Math may use this map, which covers the sixth grade standards. Teachers will need to determine the appropriate pace at which material is covered and mastered by their students.

Pre-Algebra

Middle school math teachers who teach Pre-Algebra may use this map, which covers the seventh grade standards. Teachers will need to determine the appropriate pace at which material is covered and mastered by their students.

Middle school math teachers who teach seventh grade Pre-Algebra A may use this map, which covers the first part of the two-year Pre-Algebra curriculum. THE 2007-08 MAP IS CURRENTLY ONLY AVAILABLE...THIS MAP WILL BE UPDATED SOON.

Pre-Algebra B

Middle school math teachers who teach eighth grade Pre-Algebra B may use this map, which covers the second part of the two-year Pre-Algebra curriculum. THE 2007-08 MAP IS CURRENTLY ONLY AVAILABLE...THIS MAP WILL BE UPDATED SOON.

Algebra 1A
(Middle School)

Algebra 1A teachers may use this map. The curriculum for this course primarily consists of the topics included in Chapters 1 through 7 of the Prentice Hall Algebra 1 textbook. A review of computation involving the four operations with fractions and decimals, as well as a review of the General Math CST standards, is included in the Algebra 1A curriculum.

Algebra 1
(Middle School)

Algebra 1 teachers may use this map. The curriculum for this course consists of the topics included in the Prentice Hall Algebra 1 textbook. This map adjusts the order of the textbook chapters, moving Lessons 11-1 through 11-3 between the end of Chapter 10 and the start of Chapter 13 in late March.

Geometry
(Middle School)

Geometry teachers may use this map. The curriculum for this course consists of the topics included in the Glencoe Geometry textbook. This map adjusts the order of the textbook chapters, moving Chpater 12 after Chapter 6, and concluding the school year with Chapter 11, then 13. THE 2007-08 MAP IS CURRENTLY ONLY AVAILABLE...THIS MAP WILL BE UPDATED SOON.
