6TH Grade Elective
Wheel
If a student chooses the wheel, he/she will be scheduled
into 4 of these and will find out which ones they get when they get their
schedules in late summer! Each
class is approx. 10 weeks long & students will be placed into any 4
listed, not necessarily just those listed below in the example.
- Art – Students will learn new ways of seeing and thinking about
the world around them. Drawing, painting, and working with 3-dimensional
media are introduced; as are skills for creative thinking, strategies for
problem solving, and visual literacy for the 21st Century. Collaborative
group effort is emphasized and individual talents are encouraged, with
each student developing his or her unique style in a supportive and safe
environment.
- Computers – This class will develop beginning computer skills and
explore computer applications while primarily focusing on
keyboarding/typing skills.
They will be learning the home-row keys and will be building their
typing proficiency skills using a typing program. Students will also learn basic
word processing, research mapping, basic graphic design and spreadsheet
layout. Additionally,
students will be learning Internet searching and PowerPoint presentation
skills.
- Drama – Students will participate during class in class scenes,
improvisations and storytelling exercises using basic acting principles.
They will develop their imaginations, ensemble skills &
self-esteem. Students will
also become familiar with the stage areas, body positions, character development,
the technical aspects of theatre and basic theater terminology.
- Home Arts – Students will learn sewing for approx. 6 weeks & food
for 3 weeks. While sewing,
they will learn to work independently on their projects and learn how to
use the sewing machine.
During the foods portion, the students will learn kitchen safety,
sanitation procedures, how to read and follow a recipe, learn proper use
of kitchen equipment & proper clean up procedures.
- Spanish – This class will expose students to an introductory level
of the Spanish language and culture, which will be participation-driven
due to content taught. During
this class students will learn greetings, expressions, numbers, feelings,
days of the week, and many other household or classroom words.
- Study Skills – Students will learn how to get and
stay organized! They will also learn, and practice, study tips to improve
overall success in school.
