Cognitive Concepts

Goal of the Program:

Earobics is a PreK-3 early literacy solution designed to ensure that all students have the foundational skills they need to be successful readers. Earobics provides a diverse language experiences and facilitates the transition from spoken language to print.

Grade Level:  PreK - 3

Step I- Foundations recommended for grades pre-k through 1

Step II Connections recommended for grades 2-3

The program comes with directions in 10 different languages and is appropriate for ESL and Special Education students who are older but working at a lower level.

Technology Required:  

Earobics is a web-based program that is available on the district network. It is platform neutral, and requires a standard web browser to access. It is also available from home with a high speed Internet connect.

Reading Components Addressed: Phonemic awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension

Recommended Instructional Minutes:  30 minutes teacher directed, 20 minutes software, DAILY  

Overall Design and Instructional Sequence of the Program:  

Students develop phonological awareness skills employing the software, which provides systematic, individualized instruction.  Interactive software games automatically adapt to each student's skill level and progress.

Students strengthen language enrichment skills while participating in classroom activities, songs and chants that encourage the development of vocabulary and language concepts, and the production of sounds, words and sentences.

Knowledge of letters and sounds and word analysis are developed through hands-on activities, letter and word cards, and alphabet manipulatives.

Comprehension is developed while reading with teachers or independently, using Big Books, Little Books, Take-home books, talking CD-ROM books and books on audiocassettes and videotapes.

Shared writing activities incorporate Earobics Literacy Launch literature and materials.

  • Students can be placed DIBELS scores
  • Progress is monitored by the software. District, school, classroom, and student reports are generated by the software. Reports can be filtered by gender, disability, language spoken, ethnicity, Title I or LEP status and grade level.
  • Earobics also tracks student time on task.

Professional Development Requirements and Cost: 

Earobics includes professional development with every implementation.

Who Can Deliver Program:  Classroom teacher or trained instructional aide

Strengths of the Program:

Earobics teaches skills to students in all 5 areas of reading. The program supplements a core reading program with approximately 30 minutes of additional instruction/intervention per day.

Web-based program which includes electronic progress monitoring.

Students may use program at home with internet connection.

Weaknesses of the Program:

The strength of the program is the Earobics software. The additional teacher materials, although they may be purchased separately, are NOT recommended for implementation.

Cost:  

Licenses for the program are purchased at approximately $85.00 per student and must be purchased in blocks of five ($425.00).

Server Cost: Initially purchased by RH Dana. Cost for additional schools to be pro-rated.
