Articles Brought from Home

Personal items, including toys or devises such as iPods, may not be brought from home without prior permission of a student’s teacher. The prohibition helps prevent loss or damage of an item that may have great financial or personal value. The school district does not carry insurance for student items. (Personal items of students may be covered under homeowner’s insurance subject to the deductible and type of coverage.)

Lost and Found

Students or parents may check a school’s lost-and-found bin for missing items. Elementary students should have lunch boxes and other items marked with their name for easy identification. Unclaimed items at schools are donated to charities at the end of the school year.

Lost Books

Students are asked to take care of school materials. Parents will be charged for lost or damaged books. A form outlining use of school books is given to parents during registration.

Pets

Orange County health regulations prohibit dogs on school grounds at any time. Parents who own a dog can help by keeping the dog confined and having it wear a tag which includes a home phone number. Students are asked not to bring pets from home. Pets may never be taken aboard school buses.

Telephone Usage/Cell Phones

Students may use the school telephone only in an emergency. Parents are asked to plan ahead with their children regarding any changes to procedures for students to follow after school. Changes, such as not riding the bus, should be communicated to the student’s teacher by written note.

CUSD permits possession of cell phones (electronic signaling devices) on a school campus but requires that they be turned off during the instructional day. It does not encourage students to bring them to campus, but understands the wishes of parents to communicate electronically with their children, particularly in an emergency. If a student uses a cell phone inappropriately on campus, school officials have the authority to confiscate the device. This will occur only in cases where the device is used in a manner that disrupts the learning environment. The use of camera functions on electronic devices is prohibited on campuses.

No pupil shall be prohibited from possessing or using an electronic signaling device that is determined by a licensed physician to be essential for the health of the pupil and the use of which is limited to the pupil’s health.
