ATTENDANCE, TARDIES, REPORTING STUDENT ABSENCES

Regular school attendance is critical to academic success for children. Arriving at school on time and ready to learn teaches a strong work ethic as well as builds responsibility. However, children should be kept home when they are ill. Ample time will be provided for them to make up any work that is missed A Call-in Sick program is provided at Oak Grove School. Please leave a recorded message at 643-0244 when children are absent from school. Pupils are excused if absent because of illness. If a child is tardy (is not in class line by 7:45 bell), he/she must check in through the front office before being admitted to class. Frequent tardies without a valid excuse is considered truancy under the law. Students with continued tardies and/or unexcused absences will be referred to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB) for disciplinary action.

MEDICATION

Medical treatment is the responsibility of the parent(s) and family physician. Medication, both prescription and over the counter, should be dispensed at home, rather than at school, whenever possible. The only exceptions involve special or serious problems where it is deemed absolutely necessary by the physician that the medication is given during school hours. In order for any medication (even Tylenol, cough drops, etc.) to be dispensed at school, an Administration of Medicine form signed by both the physician and parent, must be on file in the school office. A new Administration of Medicine form is required each school year.

RELEASING CHILDREN TO ADULTS

Parents must sign their child out in the office when removing students from school early. Children will only be released to those individuals listed on the emergency card (Student Information Card). If special pick up arrangements are made with persons not listed on the card, please send a note to the school office. Any pertinent custody information should be brought to the attention of the teacher and principal immediately.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

Parents play a vital role in making Oak Grove School a success. During Back to School Night, teachers will discuss the many ways parents can be involved in their child’s education. We rely heavily on parents to assist us both inside and outside the classroom and at home. Oak Grove School maintains an active PTA. Ongoing opportunities are made available to help plan our many school events. All parents are invited and encouraged to join the PTA and to attend the meetings on alternate months beginning in September. Visit the website at www.oakgrovepta.com.

VISITING CLASSROOMS

Teachers structure their day to maximize instructional time and minimize interruptions. Please use the school office to make any deliveries to students, or place forgotten musical instruments on the steps of the Hall of Fame and forgotten lunches in the “lost lunch” bin in the stadium dining area (lunch tables area) with your child’s name clearly marked on the item. If you would like to observe in your child’s classroom, please make arrangements with the teacher or principal.

LOST AND FOUND

Labeling jackets, sweaters, lunch pails, and other personal items will help us return misplaced items to their proper owner. A tall lost and found cabinet is located in the lunch area next to the drinking fountain. Check in the office as a last resort. Unclaimed items are periodically donated to charitable organizations.

LUNCH PROGRAM

School lunches may be purchased for $1.75 each. Cookies and milk may be purchased separately for $.35 each. Free and reduced lunch applications are sent to parents of all CUSD students in the first day packets. Parents are encouraged to prepay lunches for their child to help avoid lost lunch money and other mishaps. A minimum of 10 and a maximum of 90 lunches can be purchased at one time.

BUS RIDERS

Bus pass applications, pricing, routes and schedules are available on the CUSD website at capousd.org/transport as well as in the school office. Annual, semester and one-way passes can be purchased. Students are required to carry a bus pass while riding the school bus. Bus schedules will be published in the local newspapers in August.

WALKERS

Parents are asked to support our efforts to teach children to respect the property of others. Lawns, shrubbery and trees adjacent to walkways are not to be abused. Students walking to school are encouraged to walk with a friend and to always use crosswalks. Students should NEVER walk through the school parking lot area. Students should always walk directly home from school.

BICYCLES, SKATEBOARDS, ROLLER BLADES AND RAZOR SCOOTERS

Bikes may be ridden to and from school by 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students only. Please contact the principal if you have an extenuating circumstance for a younger child. Helmets and bike locks are required. The school is not responsible for stolen bicycles. Bicycles should be locked at the racks near the YMCA portables. Bike riding is not permitted on school grounds. For safety reasons, skateboards, roller blades and razor type scooters may not be ridden to/from school or on school property.

WEAPONS ON CAMPUS

The Board of Trustees maintains a “zero tolerance” policy concerning weapons on campus. Any student in possession of, or even a party to, a student possessing a knife, gun or weapon is subject to immediate suspension and will be further recommended for expulsion. Toy replicas of guns, as well as pocketknives are also prohibited. This policy will be strictly enforced. Please help us ensure that our campus remains safe by discussing this policy with your child.

CLASS ASSIGNMENTS

Our professional staff makes class assignments. Teachers at all grade levels work together and team teaching is universal at Oak Grove School. Any parent-initiated changes would cause a disruption to the balance at each grade level, especially due to class size reduction legislation and ongoing enrollment growth. In order for a parent-initiated change to be considered, parents must submit a request in writing to the principal stating the specific reason for the request. There will be a meeting with all school personnel having interaction with that particular student, and the school staff will make a determination. No changes are made during the first two to three weeks of school.

Whole school flag assembly (Parents welcome!) and wear your Oak Grove spiritwear on Fridays!
