CUSD Budget Information and Upcoming Public Meetings

As you know, the State of California and the Nation are confronting a severe economic crisis.  Unfortunately, the budget crisis will have a drastic impact on our schools and district.  On Thursday, November 6, 2008, the Governor announced his proposed solution to the current fiscal year budget shortfall.  It includes significant mid-year cuts for K-12 education.

The Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees will convene a series of meetings to discuss the current budget shortfall and possible mid-year cuts, in addition to cuts for the 2009/10 and 2010/11 school years, and how these cuts will impact the district and schools.  The public is encouraged to attend.

The meetings will be held at the CUSD District office on the following dates and times:

1. Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at 6:30 p.m.

2. Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at 6:00 p.m.

3. Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 6:00 p.m.

A regular Board Meeting is scheduled for Monday, December 8, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.

Thank You Designer's Magic Carpet

Mrs. Primack’s class will sit more comfortably at Friday Flag thanks to Designer’s Magic Carpet and Floorings who donated 20 carpet squares for the students. Maria and Richard Osborne have their retail store next to Trader Joe’s in San Clemente.

Thank you from Mrs. Primack’s Palisades Waves.

“Help Our Students Shine”

Thank you Palisades families for becoming PTA Members for the 2008-2009 school year! To date, 377 of you have officially signed up!

On October 10th, we wrapped up a contest where each class competed against each other to sign up the most PTA members. The class with the highest percentage of new members would receive a pizza party provided by the PTA board.

We are happy to announce the winners of the contest. From the upper grades, with 20 students and 41 PTA members is Mrs. Reames’ 3rd grade class. From the lower grades, with 20 students and 32 PTA members is Mrs. Yaple’s 2nd grade class. Congratulations to you both and to your students!

We also had 10 classes who hit 90% or more participation and they are the lucky winners of a free meal at Island’s Restaurant: Mrs. Rice’s, Ms. Waldron’s, Mrs. Lasho’s, Mrs. Poteet’s, Mrs. Aguilar’s, Mrs. Sims’, Mrs. Primack’s, Ms. C. Davis, Ms.Mooney’s, and Mrs. Romero’s Parents, Teachers, and Staff – Thank you for all of your efforts in this membership campaign. We couldn’t have done it without you. But…it’s not over yet.

We will continue to reach out to parents in the hopes of achieving 100% participation. If 525 members sign up, Mrs. Murray has promised to let the Student Council dress her up however they choose for one day. We know the kids are looking forward to that!

STATE BUDGET CRISIS IMPACTS CUSD

As you may already be aware, the Governor is proposing to suspend Proposition 98, the minimum public education funding guarantee, in the 2008-09 budget. State PTA is asking you to contact our state elected officials to voice your opinions regarding cuts to the education budget. Cuts in funding are being made at the State level. The Governor, State Senators and Assembly Members are the ones who you need to make aware of your feelings. These cuts WILL impact your children in CUSD. CELEBRATION BOOK CLUB

Purchasing a book for the school library in your child's honor is a great way to celebrate his or her birthday or even a special achievement!

A book plate will be placed inside the book and presented to your child in their classroom by Mrs. Murray. How cool is that?

Book lists and order forms are available in the school office. Be sure to allow at least a week before the birthday for the school to get the book and prepare it.

WAVE WEAR

T-shirt Order Form(PDF)

Think Pink! Or blue, red or gray! Get your child's (Don't forget yourself!) Palisades T-shirt or sweatshirt. You can pick up an order form in the school office or print out the PDF form here, attach the cash or check made out to Palisades PTA. Remember Friday's are school spirit days.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

We are still collecting box tops from select products that you use every day. Place your name and teacher's name on them and drop them into the Box Tops drawer in front of the school office. Increase your chances by asking friends and relatives to save them for you too. Two new box tops are drawn at every Friday assembly...You might win something cool!
