Welcome to R. H. Dana Elementary School

Our principal is Chris Weber, Ed.D. We are excited about the 2006-2007 school year. We are proud to offer full day Kindergarten and reduced class sizes in grades four and five. Of course, like all schools in Capistrano Unified School District, there are no more than 20 students in grades one through three.

RH Dana is named A California Distinguished School!!!!

Capistrano Unified School District announced today that two CUSD schools have been selected as 2008 California Distinguished Schools by the California Department of Education. Chaparral Elementary School in Ladera Ranch and R. H. Dana Elementary School in Dana Point were recognized as two of the state's most outstanding public schools. Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell personally called R.H. Dana’s Chris Weber to share the good news. “The teachers, students, and community have made R. H. Dana an exceptional school, and now a California Distinguished School,” said Principal Chris Weber. “We are proud of our achievements to date, and look forward to many more in the future.”

In order to be eligible to apply for Distinguished School status schools first must meet rigorous achievement standards.  Schools then submit an extensive written application, describing their curriculum, instructional program, supports for students, and school climate. Applications are evaluated by the California Department of Education, in partnership with the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association. Finally, schools undergo a site visitation by a group of professional educators.

Of more than 5,000 elementary schools in California, only 343 schools were selected to be honored this year. Forty-one CUSD schools have now been designated as California Distinguished Schools. This year’s Distinguished Schools will be honored at the 2008 California Distinguished Schools Awards Ceremony and dinner at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim on Friday, May 16.

Statement of Beliefs

R. H. Dana Elementary has had the good fortune, through the hard work of students and staff, to achieve impressive academic accolades of late, including large API gains and a “10” similar schools rankings. The staff recently reflected on, and slightly revised, our statement of beliefs. In examining our work, we again tried to create a statement of beliefs that reflects what we do and why we do it. The statement of beliefs appears below:

R.H. Dana Statement of Expectations and Beliefs

Social Justice

We strive to help our students achieve the same college-level readiness enjoyed by the most advantaged elementary school student.  We provide superior, equitable opportunities for all R. H. Dana students.

Every Single Child

We focus on the growth, self-esteem, and success of every child. To meet their individual needs, students receive differentiated instruction for all learning styles and abilities.

Highest Quality Writing

Our school wide quality writing program is driven by the California State Standards and is modeled after the 6+1 Traits of Effective Writing.  Our writing instruction is guided by grade-level rubrics, and the writing process and traits are explicitly taught daily. Each classroom’s environment includes: a writing wall with writing prompts, writing process examples and charts, anchor papers, and published writing pieces.

Critical Thinking

We challenge students to think critically across the curriculum through exposure to a variety of enriching and meaningful experiences, including music, art, and cultural events in the community.  Our students develop skills necessary to be lifelong learners: questioning, analyzing, synthesizing, and problem solving.

Early, Frequent, Specific Interventions

We assess student academic performance regularly using diagnostic tools such as DIBELS, Comprehension Analysis, and common assessments. This data supports explicit and systematic instruction that meets each student’s learning needs and goals. We support individualized learning needs in a variety of small, flexible groupings.

High Engagement

We expect students to be authentically engaged, while showing respect, responsibility, and readiness to learn. We expect students to fully participate in their learning.

High Expectations

High expectations guide and inspire our professional learning community. We regularly communicate objectives to students and parents.  We have the highest expectations for all students at all times – in-and-out of the classroom, as well as in whole group, small group, and independent activities. All students are expected to achieve at proficiency or above and produce quality work at all times.

Focused Curriculum

We deliver a focused, standards-based curriculum. We expect all students to achieve proficiency or above in all areas of literacy and mathematics.

We expect that this document will continue to be a living document. We will constantly check that our practices match the beliefs contained within. If new, important aspects of schooling emerge on which we choose to focus, they will be incorporated into this statement.

R. H. DANA HONORED BY STATE SCHOOLS CHIEF JACK O'CONNELL WITH TITLE I ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

SACRAMENTO - State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell today named 239 California schools as 2007-08 Title I Academic Achievement Award winners. They represent 113 school districts in 33 counties. The list of winners is attached. "These outstanding schools have shown that with hard work and tight focus, the challenges of poverty, language, and socioeconomic background can be overcome," said O'Connell. "They have created high-quality, active learning environments where the achievement gap is closing and where all students are reaching the expectations of our state's rigorous standards. In these schools, teachers and administrators work together to ensure that all students are progressing and moving toward graduation that will lead to more productive, successful lives. I am very proud of these schools, their accomplishments, and am pleased to honor them as Academic Achieving Schools. "Two schools among the 239 state awardees were identified for the National Title I Distinguished School Award. West Campus High School in Sacramento City Unified School District had the greatest percentage of students scoring at or above the proficient level in the federal accountability model, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), in mathematics and English-language arts. Also, Monarch Academy in the Oakland Unified School District made the most progress as measured by the state accountability model, the Academic Performance Index (API). This awards program recognizes only schools receiving federal Title I funds for socioeconomically disadvantaged students. The schools must demonstrate that all students are making significant progress toward proficiency on California's academic content standards. These standards define the knowledge, concepts, and skills students are expected to acquire at each grade level. The criteria to qualify for the award have become more rigorous each year. Title I schools must demonstrate the achievement level of twice the schoolwide API growth target, meet all significant subgroup targets, and achieve twice the API growth target for the socioeconomically disadvantaged subgroup for two consecutive years. Schools also must have made AYP for two years in a row, and at least 40 percent of the enrolled students in each school must meet the poverty index. Title I is a part of the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 and is the largest federally funded program in the country. It is designed to improve the academic achievement of disadvantaged students. Of more than 9,000 schools in California, more than 6,000 of them are Title I schools. The 239 awardees will receive recognition at an award ceremony planned in conjunction with California's Annual Title I Conference scheduled for April 21-22, 2008 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Century City. The conference is a premiere staff development opportunity for administrative and instructional educators serving Title I students and for parents of these students.
