Registration>

Parents who are new to the area and reside within district attendance boundaries may enroll their child at the school serving their neighborhood. To register, parents need to provide the school with proof of residence and the child's immunization records. At registration, the name and address of the child's previous school will be requested if parents do not have possession of student records. For students entering kindergarten and grade 1, parents need to provide a birth certificate or other evidence of age. For immunization requirements at each grade level, please see the Immunization section under Health Support Information.

Parents of district students who would like their child to attend a school other than the school serving their neighborhood should follow the process outlined under the Open Enrollment program explained on this page. Forms can be obtained at schools or at the district office.

There is no need to re-register students who are currently enrolled at their home school.

Attention Kindergarten Parents

All neighborhood schools accept registration forms for kindergarten students who will reach five years of age by December 2 of the year that the child will enter kindergarten. Parents are encouraged to attend kindergarten orientation sessions held in the spring prior to the child entering school in the fall. For more information on kindergarten registration and orientation, please contact individual schools or ask for the district publication, “Welcome to Kindergarten.” The brochure is also on this website. Click Here for the Kindergarten page.

Open Enrollment Program

The district’s Open Enrollment program offers parents the opportunity to apply to the school that they would like their child to attend. Since the program began 16 years ago, more than 90 percent of our parents annually choose to have their child remain at their home school, which is the local school serving their child’s attendance area. For a variety of personal or educational reasons, however, some parents prefer to have their child attend another school within the district. Our program provides parents with this option on a space-available basis. Detailed information describing each school and its academic offerings is available under the name of each campus.

Parents of high-school student athletes are urged to learn more about CIF sports eligibility requirements prior to pursuing the Open Enrollment process, so that there will be no misunderstanding regarding sports participation rules. Transportation to any school other than the home school is the responsibility of parents.

For more information, call our Open Enrollment Hotline
at (949) 234-9335.

Transportation

School BusCapistrano Unified School District drivers operate more than 160 school buses each day to carry some 7,430 students safely to and from school. They log 2.5 million miles annually. Transportation is provided for elementary school students who live more than one mile from school, for middle school students who live more than 1.5 miles from school, and for high school students who live more than 2.5 miles from campus.

Parents who choose to have their child travel to and from school on a school bus must purchase a bus pass. The basic annual bus pass transportation fee for 2007-08 is $401. A percentage discount is available for the second and third child in a family. Complete information about bus service to individual schools and fee information is available from the Bus Pass Office at (949) 489-7420 or (949) 489-7421 or the Transportation Web site.

Information about Orange County Transportation Authority routes (OCTA) which serve district schools is available by calling (714) 636-7433, or at the website: www.octa.net.

It’s Common Courtesy and It’s the Law!

Please obey all California school bus safety laws. The red light law requires that motorists stop when school buses activate the flashing red lights, indicating that the bus is loading or unloading children.

When you see flashing red lights activated on a school bus, prepare to STOP! Violators will be fined.

And please obey all traffic rules at our schools, especially in pick-up and drop-off areas, for everyone’s safety!

Bicycles

Bicycles may be ridden to school by students who follow safety rules. Bicycle locks are required. For safety reasons, we suggest that only children in Grade 3 and above ride bicycles. Bicycles must be walked on and off school grounds. The district does not carry insurance for loss of bicycles. (Personal items of students, such as bicycles, may be covered under homeowner’s insurance subject to the deductible and type of coverage.)

Safe Route to School

Parents of children who walk or ride their bicycles to school, are asked to go over a safe route to school with their children. Walkers may not take shortcuts through private property. All children are expected to display good behavior on the way to and from school.

Skateboards, Scooters and Related Items

The school district prohibits skateboards, scooters and related items from being used on school grounds at any time.

Food & Nutrition

StudentsThe Food and Nutrition Department of Capistrano Unified School District is a team of food service professionals working in conjunction with parents, students, and educators to provide a healthy school nutrition environment. Food and Nutrition Services recognizes that wellness and proper nutrition are related to students’ physical well being, growth, development and readiness to learn. All foods available in the district schools during the school day are offered to students with consideration for promoting student health and reducing childhood obesity.

We strive to provide a variety of healthy choices that appeal to students. All meals served to students are analyzed to meet or exceed requirements of the United States Department of Agriculture and the School Meal Initiative, as well as newly passed State Senate Bills. Our menu items feature whole grains, and are low fat, low sugar, and low sodium.

Updated this year is our Food and Nutrition website www.capousd.org/campus where parents and students can find menus, forms, internet deposit and “Health-e Living” tools with nutritional facts and information. Parents can prepay for meals and/or healthy a la carte items by setting up a prepaid account. This can be done by filling out a form available at your school or on our website where you can pay by cash, check, or charge or internet deposit. By using internet deposit you can monitor your child’s spending, set spending limits, and monitor their lunch balance.

Food safety is a priority. Our employees are highly trained and certified in safe food handling procedures. Our facilities are regularly inspected by the Orange County Health Department.

Capistrano Unified School District has adopted a Wellness Policy (BP-5030). We encourage parents and teachers to provide healthy food choices for class parties, celebrations, classroom incentives, and lunches brought from home. Working together we can make our schools a place where a student’s health is a priority and the benefits have a positive effect on their academic success and overall wellness.

For more information regarding Food and Nutrition programs, please call 949/234-9509.
