Grades: Kindergarten through 5
Dedicated
in 1977, Harold J. Ambuehl Elementary
School is situated in a rustic location
on the bank of San Juan Creek, surrounded
by open fields and equestrian riding stables.
Historic landmarks throughout the community,
such as Mission San Juan Capistrano and
the Los Rios Historic District, provide
reminders of Early California.
Although Ambuehl prides itself on its
historic atmosphere, we are committed
to preparing productive young citizens
in this 21st century. An outstanding staff
at each grade level provides our students
with learning experiences that are interesting,
relevant and meaningful to their everyday
lives. Our school’s educational
program is a balance of intensive basic
skills instruction in the fundamental
subjects of reading, language and mathematics,
and of higher level thinking and problem-solving
skills.
Technology is integrated into all areas of our curriculum. Throughout our school, students use computers and other tools of technology for writing and publishing, research and skills development in all subjects. A learning lab with 20 iMac computers serves grades K-5. This is supported by additional computers in every classroom. This year, our school received an additional computer lab, thanks to a federal grant received by our school district. Ambuehl's fourth grade students write frequently on computers in this new lab, submitting their papers for scoring using a software program which provides immediate feedback to students and allows them to edit their work multiple times and later share their work through electronic publishing. Speaking of technology, a faster network system was installed at Ambuehl this summer, as well as Cox internet access, which is 4.5 times faster than our previous system. These improvements greatly facilitate student research and email communication for the school.
In addition,
personal growth and high self-esteem are nurtured in each student.
Student recognition is ongoing within the classrooms. Our teachers
provide frequent praise and rewards for excellent citizenship and
academic performance. Local businesses, in partnership with Ambuehl,
provide additional means for recognizing students through certificates
and other incentives.
Our school enjoys an active partnership with our PTA and educational
foundation. Their ongoing support has provided Ambuehl with special
educational programs, assemblies, technology and learning supplies
to enhance our classrooms. Our many parent volunteers work alongside
the teachers and participate in school events to further support
our program.
It is no wonder there is a strong sense of “family”
among our entire school community. Many families living outside
our attendance boundary make Ambuehl Elementary their school of
choice. Once families and staff members come to Ambuehl, they are
inclined to stay for as long as they can.
