Located in Laguna Niguel, Marian Bergeson Elementary School provides students with a standards based, well-rounded educational program. District performance objectives and state curriculum standards are blended with an emphasis on character development in a positive and safe environment. Teachers and support staff are committed to lifelong learning through continuous professional development in curriculum and teaching strategies. High standards of student achievement and behavior are expected and maintained. The school’s philosophy encourages parents and community members to become involved in bringing our students a variety of academic and social programs. Together, all work to create a rich learning environment for our community of learners.
Science resources and materials enable teachers to enhance our already high quality science program. The science curriculum is integrated with math and language arts. All teachers implement a “hands-on, minds-on” approach to teaching science and strive to actively involve students in their lessons. Many field trips and assemblies, including a fifth-grade science camp, reinforce science concepts. A science lab with a highly qualified teacher’s aide enhances the program, as well. A garden with sections reserved for each grade level provides additional enrichment. Students apply the sciences needed to make living things grow.
With technology integrated across the curriculum, all classrooms have computers and are connected to the Internet through a “firewall filter.” Resources include two computer labs, Internet access from all classrooms, and laser disc, CD/ROM and video curriculum support. All grade levels strive for mastery of district technology standards. A school-site technology committee monitors the school technology plan and is continually looking at ways to improve and upgrade existing programs.
Marian Bergeson maintains its own website that is updated regularly with school and district information, along with links to educationally appropriate websites and local activities. The principal publishes an electronic newsletter, the BARK, twice a week with timely information for parents and students. Many of the teachers maintain classroom websites providing parents with in-class and homework information. All teachers and administrative staff use e-mail to correspond regularly with parents. For student safety, a voice mail attendance system is in place to notify parents of unreported student absences.
After school intervention and enrichment programs are offered to assist struggling students and enrich learning experiences for all students. Reading, Math and English Language Learner intervention programs help our struggling students. Homework Clubs provide a quiet place for students to work under the supervision of a teacher. Foreign languages, science, art, chess, technology and other enrichment classes are offered on a fee basis.
The Bergeson community is committed to creating a positive and safe environment in which students can learn and achieve. The school provides community leadership, and proudly participates in the national Character Counts! program. Our staff recognizes positive student achievements and contributions at five student recognition assemblies held throughout the year.
Parent participation is a key to childhood success. Volunteers work regularly in the classrooms and from home to provide assistance to students and teachers. The Bergeson Elementary School Foundation, Bergeson PTA and the School Site Council work together to achieve school goals and enrich the learning experiences of our students. Parents and community involvement is encouraged and has become a tradition at our school.
