Clarence Lobo Elementary School opened
its doors in September 1994 and is the
first school in California to be named
after a Native American. Clarence Lobo
was chief of the Juaneño Band of
Mission Indians for nearly four decades
until his death in 1985. Chief Lobo devoted
his life to acquiring land rights and
recognition for his people. At our school’s
dedication, the Juaneños paid tribute
to their beloved leader through a special
ceremony. Our students and staff remain
inspired by the
spirit of this great man and are proud
to help maintain his legacy.
Our instruction focuses on an integrated
curriculum and teamwork. At each grade
level, teaching responsibilities are shared
to capitalize on the unique talents and
expertise of staff. Our teachers meet
regularly to plan activities and instruction
based on Capistrano Objectives for Reaching
Excellence (CORE) and the California state
performance standards. All students at
Clarence Lobo are provided a balanced
curriculum with a strong academic focus.
Inclusion and mainstreaming of students
with special needs creates an environment
where all children’s needs are addressed.
A supportive staff and students make this
happen.
Technology is incorporated into all facets
of our instructional program. In every
classroom, computers serve as an important
learning tool and valuable teaching resource.
Rather than technology becoming another
“subject” for our teachers
to teach, the computer rich environment
offers flexibility and practical use for
students. Internet access, computer networking,
multi-media programs and regular visits
to our Media Center are strong components
of Lobo’s technology plan.
Parent and community involvement are a
major part of our school environment.
Students, staff and parents take an active
role in San Clemente community events.
All Lobo families are asked to participate
in their children’s education. Attendance
at school functions and classroom activities
is strongly encouraged and highly promoted.
A child’s educational experience
at Clarence Lobo is meant to be a family
affair!
Recognizing the importance of a balanced
education, all of our students participate
in the Meet the Masters art program. Additionally,
we are a “Class Act” school.
This program is funded by a grant and
provides a partnership with the Pacific
Symphony Orchestra. Music appreciation,
learning about a major composer’s
life, and attending musical performances
are the major components of this outstanding
program.Character
development and the enhancement of social
skills are inherent in maintaining our
school's positive climate. In affiliation
with the National Character Counts Coalition,
the school introduces the Team Lobo Community
Skills (TLCs) and six Pillars of Success,
which serve as the backdrop for building
sound character in students. Each month,
a different TLC/Pillar of Success is introduced
and reinforced school wide. Thirty traits
are covered on a three-year rotation schedule.
Clarence Lobo achieved the prestigious
recognition of being named a California
Distinguished School in spring 1998. Our
school’s goals are achieved through
the combined efforts of our innovative
staff, involved parents and broad-based
community support. Following the words
of legendary coach “Bear”
Bryant, the Clarence Lobo staff believes:
“Individuals play the game,
but teams win championships!”
