MARCHING TO EXCELLENCE

Grades: Preschool through 5

Richard Henry Dana Elementary School is located on the historic Dana Point bluff overlooking California’s scenic Pacific Coast . Named in honor of Richard Henry Dana, the author of Two Years Before the Mast, the school is closely linked with California ’s exciting history and its rich cultural diversity.

Our attractive campus serves students in preschool through grade 5. Our Kindergarten program lasts for the entire school day with no more than 20 students in each class. The state funded preschool program serves 48 children daily. Lobo Lodge, the school district’s Native American History Center, is also located on our campus.

At R.H. Dana Elementary, our goal is to prepare students for success in the 21st century. In the classroom, this translates into dynamic learning experiences in basic skills, instructional technology, marine science and second-language acquisition. Our Balanced Literacy Program, as well as our mathematics, science, social science, music, and art programs, make up students’ daily classroom experience. To further support the developmental learning needs of our students, after school programs are offered in remediation and enrichment.

A unique Paleontology Center has been created on the R.H. Dana campus to house a nine-million-year-old fossilized whale skeleton. The Center provides classes with the opportunity to experience hands-on science. R.H. Dana Elementary is in close proximity to the Ocean Institute and the Dana Point Marine Life Refuge. All students participate in the Outdoor Science Sequence, a series of field study experiences that directly relate to standards in science.

At R.H. Dana Elementary, students learn to use technology as a personal tool to communicate, conduct research, and publish and produce original works. Our school has TWO well-equipped computer labs, as well as classroom computers. Wireless access to the Internet is available. All of our students are provided educational experiences that develop technological life skills which are critical for success.
