Grades: Preschool through 5

Mission Statement:

Each student will master basic skills in language arts, math, science, fine arts and physical education. All students will show respect for themselves, others, their school and community. The school will provide a nurturing, caring and safe environment where learning is an exciting, active process. All students will be motivated to challenge themselves in everything they endeavor through academic and creative experience and develop a lifelong love of learning.

The Viejo Elementary School community prides itself on creating a safe, positive and nurturing learning environment that enables each student to reach their maximum potential.

Each day begins with a morning flag ceremony, which is led by a selected exemplary student. Announcements and special occasions are also celebrated at this time. Bringing the entire school together for a common purpose on a daily basis helps us create a sense of community.

Our school staff and parents work collaboratively to ensure students are successful and challenged by setting high standards and expectations for all. Special emphasis is placed on acquisition of basic skills, such as reading, writing, listening, speaking and problem solving, and the ability to use those skills effectively in all subject areas, including language arts, mathematics, science, social studies and the arts.

The principal and staff at Viejo Elementary are adamant in the belief that, given the tools, every child can succeed. To that end, a community wide decision was made to implement a “Banked Minutes” program, which provides teachers and students longer blocks of instructional time four days a week. “Banked Minutes” also allows our instructional staff to meet weekly for the purpose of improving student learning.

Our students learn to use technology as a personal tool to communicate, conduct research and publish and produce original works. The school has a well equipped computer lab, as well as classroom computers. Access to the Internet is available in every classroom.

Esteem and character building are an integral part of our positive school climate. Each month, our school features a different attribute as a means of teaching our children how to become good citizens. Activities and discussions are planned around identified attributes such as respect, responsibility, generosity and compassion.

Our discipline program supports instruction by setting high expectations for behavior while creating a safe, nurturing environment for all students. Through classroom and school wide activities, students learn to become positive and well-informed decision makers.

Our Peer Assistance League (PAL) students work closely with other students to problem solve alternate solutions to conflict. Our staff recognizes the positive contributions of students at four awards assemblies held throughout the year. Students are recognized for excellence in academics, citizenship, sportsmanship and improvement. In addition, students may earn Viejo Viking Awards daily and receive prizes from weekly drawings.

A mandatory uniform program is in place at Viejo Elementary. Our program encourages appropriate school dress and provides reasonably priced clothing. Parents are surveyed yearly regarding the mandatory uniform policy, and for the past several years they have supported its continuance.

Viejo Elementary has an active partnership with its PTA. This support provides for technology, field trips, fine and practical arts activities, and assemblies. Parent volunteers work alongside the teachers and participate in school events to further support our educational program.
