Mission
Statement
The mission
of Wood Canyon Elementary School is to
provide a place where all students and
teachers strive for excellence in academics,
habits of lifelong learning are developed,
social and emotional growth are nurtured,
and the visual and performing arts are
emphasized. Our children will learn and
grow in a positive atmosphere where the
staff, parents, and students are enthusiastic
about the learning and teaching process.
A strong curricular
foundation is emphasized at Wood Canyon in all subject areas. The
Wood Canyon staff recognizes the diverse learning styles of its
students by giving them opportunities to develop critical thinking
skills, solve problems, and make decisions.
Students are recognized
on a consistent basis through Formal Friday Super Star Awards, Shining
Star/Super Star Awards, raffles, and various classroom incentive
programs.
Approximately
800 kindergarten through fifth grade students are enrolled at Wood
Canyon. The school’s regularly updated school web site keeps
parents, students, and community members informed of upcoming events.
This unique web site also features student artwork and stories,
along with PTA and School Site Council information. Creative and
original matted and framed student artwork is displayed throughout
the school office, as part of the “Principal’s Gallery.
”
KIDZ, radio station 104.7 FM, can be heard in the neighborhood around
the school. In addition, K-STAR Radio can also be heard over the
school’s public address system each week. Both radio shows
feature students as announcers and broadcasters.
The Wood Canyon staff includes approximately
40 dedicated and enthusiastic classroom
teachers, a principal, an assistant principal,
a teaching assistant principal, and a
multitude of classified personnel.
Parents
are actively involved in their children’s
education at Wood Canyon through membership
in the PTA and by serving as volunteers
in several school programs. The PTA funds
a variety of activities and programs to
support Wood Canyon. Parents also serve
as advisors on the School Site Council,
and parent representatives are members
on various school committees.
