9 through 12
Serra High School is an alternative
high school located in San Juan Capistrano
adjacent to the old mission. It serves
students in grades 9-12 who reside in
Capistrano Unified School District attendance
boundaries. Our student population comes
from diverse cultural and socio-economic
backgrounds. Junipero Serra’s English
Language Development program serves a
small percentage of limited-English students.
Serra High provides a specifically
structured curriculum to meet the educational
needs of students who, for numerous reasons,
are unable to progress or succeed in the
traditional high school setting.
Students
participate in a course of study, which
includes core subject areas such as mathematics,
science, social science, English, physical
education and general electives. Students
are encouraged to take additional courses
through the local Regional Occupational
Program (ROP), Saddleback College and
the Capistrano Adult Learning Center.
A wonderful variety of electives have
been added to the program: video-editing,
Microsoft Software education, tolerance,
drama, culinary arts, contemporary topics,
floral design, psychology, andjournalism.
Extra-curricular activities include dance,
sewing, soccer, and guitar.
A personal, caring approach is an integral
part of the JSHS program. Incoming students
and their parents attend an orientation
during which the school program and student
responsibilities are presented. Subsequently,
new students participate, during zero
period, in an houra- day orientation their
first week of school. The purpose of this
orientation is to provide information
and facilitate a smooth transition. Also,
every student is assigned
a mentor teacher. Students meet weekly
with their mentor teacher to discuss contemporary
issues and to receive support and guidance
in pursuit of their high school diploma.
Junipero Serra High provides numerous
programs including special education resources,
12-Step, adolescent counseling groups,
and a teen parent program designed for
pregnant minors and teenage parents. There
is a full-time counselor on staff and
a psychologist attends Serra one day each
week. Teachers and support staff attend
district sponsored workshops and district
Professional Development Academies, professional
conferences, and university courses throughout
the school year.
