Grades: 6 through 8
Newhart Middle School is located in the
heart of Mission Viejo and has been honored
as a National Blue Ribbon School and a
California Distinguished School. Newhart’s
Star test scores are among the highest
in the state. We pride ourselves on having
a balanced and comprehensive curriculum,
extensive parent and community support,
and a safe and nurturing environment.
Our experienced staff works to ensure
that all students receive a quality education.
Our academic program is designed to help
students achieve high goals and develop
the self-confidence they need to be successful
in life.
Newhart’s discipline plan was developed
to create a positive learning environment
and a safe school setting. The program
contributes to the development of sound
character, democratic values, ethical
judgment, good behavior and a self-disciplined
manner in students. The staff members
serve as role models for students through
their behavior and commitment to educating
and helping students.
Our teachers use a wide variety of instructional
practices to deliver instruction. They
work together in teams to plan classroom
activities and thematic units. Instruction
is child-centered and age-appropriate.
Teachers integrate reading, writing, speaking
and listening into all content areas,
providing instruction which gives students
a greater understanding of the world in
which they live. Skills are taught in
a meaningful context and are based upon
the state standards and district CORE
objectives of each curricular area.
Many elective classes are offered to provide
students opportunities to enrich and expand
their educational experiences. Foreign
language, art, industrial technology,
drama, yearbook, media production, computer
technology, band and chorus are among
the classes students may choose from each
year. Advisement and recognition programs
are numerous and include Peer Assistance
Leadership (PAL), GOTCHA, Proud Panthers,
Student of the Month and awards assemblies.
We encourage students to participate in
academic competitions including spelling
contests, National Geographic Geography
Bee, Math Counts, Disneyland Creativity
Challenge, art contests, American History
Writing Contest, History Day, PTA Reflections
contest, Invention Convention and many
others.
Newhart staff members work closely with
our elementary and high schools to be
sure the instructional program is appropriate
for incoming students and to ensure that
eighth graders are prepared for high school
programs and opportunities.
