Past Events

"Japanese Festival Sounds" came to Shorecliffs on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005

Johnny Mori of the well-known jazz group Hiroshima formed Japanese Festival Sounds to give audiences the opportunity to experience a unique Japanese music form: taiko drumming. In ancient Japan, the taiko drums were used in musical ensembles as well as in very functional roles: announcing the time, calling special gatherings, and even establishing the perimeters of small villages by the distances their sound carried. The sound of these hand-hewn drums has been called the closest thing to a human heartbeat — it is all-encompassing, exhilarating, and somehow uniquely comforting. The program includes a history of taiko drums and a discussion of traditional Japanese clothing worn by the musicians.

On Friday October 22, 2004 the group "Too Many Bongos" came to Shorecliffs to put on two assemblies. This group was sponsored by the Philharmonic Society's Ensembles on Tour program that go to middle schools for FREE. Their goal was to introduce music to students in a fun and educational way, and it was not geared toward only music students.

Our Kids, Our Town, Their Choices...

On the night of Feb. 7, 2001, there was an informational presentation designed to give parents answers to questions regarding the adolescent middle school years. Local community leaders such as Ron Dempsey, Jim Vasquez, Mary Nicholson, Dave Jeffries, Garrett Erickson and Peggy Lacayo talked about problems facing our students. The community leaders talked about the physical, emotional and psychological changes that are taking place in the middle school students; moveover, they discussed the choices kids are making regarding smoking, sex, alcohol and drug use. They addressed how parents, educators, and community members can assist children in making a successful transition into high school and beyond. The PTA brought cookies and drinks for all who attended.
