they also group students with like needs in order to better target instructional group which reports to that teacher for direct instruction during TLC times in reading and math. Groups are continuously monitored through ongoing assessment for progress and are discussed on a weekly basis. Regrouping occurs when determined through assessment results. The targeted instructional grouping allows for in-depth planning and allows teachers to provide a prescriptive, systematic, and tiered support system of learning activities. In addition, purposeful and ongoing TLC professional training is provided by Capistrano Unified School District for all teachers at the 6 elementary school TLC sites.
Our TLC groups meet every day with their assigned teachers, having the teachers’ undivided attention for specific instruction tailored to student needs. Students performing at the upper levels are able to work with more abstract concepts and at a quicker pace, while struggling students are able to receive prescriptive instruction which provides early intervention and targeted prevention which addresses developmental needs before these needs become obstacles to future learning endeavors.
The TLC program in CUSD is currently a finalist for the 2005 California School Association’s Golden Bell Award in recognition of exemplary and unique instructional programs. The Golden Bell honors programs, which reflect the depth and breadth necessary to address students’, changing needs. This prestigious award is sought by districts throughout California.
