Disability Plans

Capistrano Unified School District provides long-term disability insurance to benefit eligible employees in the Classified, Teamsters, and Management service, at no cost to the employee. This long-term disability plan, underwritten by UNUM/Provident, provides financial protection by paying a portion of income while an employee is disabled. The amount an employee may receive is based on the amount earned before the disability began.

Classified and Teamster Employees are eligible to receive up to 60% of monthly earnings to a maximum benefit of $2,000 per month. Depending on the age at the time of the disability, the maximum benefit period of payment may be up to 5 years.  Classified Information Booklet.

Classified Management, Certificated Management and Confidential Employees in active status may receive up to 60% of monthly earnings, to a maximum benefit of $5,000 per month. The maximum benefit period of payment is determined by age at the time of disability.

The benefit payment may be reduced by deductible sources of income and disability earnings. Some disabilities may not be covered or may have limited coverage under this plan.Management Information Booklet.

Certificated Employees
The California Teachers Association (CTA) sponsors a disability/salary protection policy through The Standard Insurance Company.  This policy is purchased directly from The Standard and certificated staff must be CTA members to qualify for the program.  Arrangements may be made with The Standard to make premium payments via payroll deductions.  Please visit CUEA’s website or contact CUEA for more information as the District does not administer this program.
