RULES FOR KIDS
- Stop
Stop what they are doing. - Don't Touch
Do not touch the gun, even if it looks like a toy. Make sure they know not to bring it to an adult, always leave it where it is. - Leave the Area
Immediately leave the area. Do not try to take the gun away from someone else. - Tell an Adult
Tell an adult about the gun they have seen. This includes times when other kids are playing with or shooting a gun. Please note that, while there is no better advice at this time for children or adolescents who encounter a gun by happenstance, the California Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians reports that such warnings alone may be insufficient accident prevention measures with children and adolescents.

TALKING POINTS FOR SPEAKING ABOUT GUNS
TALKING POINTS FOR SPEAKING ABOUT GUNS
1. Talk often, don't have the conversation just once. Talk to your children frequently about gun safety, just as you would about any other crucial safety issue.
2. Keep the language simple and easy to understand.
3. Tell children never to touch a gun, even if it looks like a toy.
4. Let them know that any situation where there in an unsupervised gun is a dangerous situation.
5. Assure your children that they will never get in trouble for telling an adult they've seen a gun.
The Capistrano Unified School District wishes to inform and emphasize to parents and legal guardians of all students the importance of adhering to their legal obligations concerning the safe storage of firearms, as mandated by California law.
Per California Penal Code Section 25100, it is mandatory for all firearms, whether loaded or unloaded, to be securely and safely stored in households where children reside or may reasonably access. To avoid legal repercussions, gun owners must store firearms in a locked container or secure them with a locking device that renders the firearm inoperable.
Please understand that any individual who negligently stores or leaves a firearm, whether loaded or unloaded, within reach or easy access of a child, may face fines, imprisonment, or both if the child gains access to, unlawfully brandishes, or improperly utilizes the firearm. The severity of criminal penalties may increase substantially if someone is harmed or killed due to a child accessing the firearm.
