Column Advancement units may be earned through graduate or upper division level courses at approved universities.  Units may also be earned through workshops or courses provided by educational institutions, such as California Department of Education or Orange County Department of Education.  College/University coursework units submitted for column advancement must be obtained at an institution accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) or similar accreditation association.   
Use of college or university courses or non-District-sponsored workshops that are not on the District's pre-approved list for column advancement will require a Graduate Work Approval form.  Graduate Work Approval forms must be submitted 20 working days in advance of the course starting date and must be signed by the site administrator.

  • Pepperdine University
  • UMass Global (fromally Brandman)
  • University, Southern California
  • Vanguard University


  1. Applicant completes Section 1 & 2
  2. Administrator signs the document in Section 3
  3. Form and supporting documents are submitted to Professional Development via email at
  4. Professional Development informs applicant of approval
  5. Professional Development provides Human Resource Services with a copy of the approved Graduate Work Approval form
What Happens Next:

What Happens Next:

  • At the completion of the course or program, request a transcript
  • Transcripts MUST be originals. Copies are not accepted
  •       Transcripts mailed to the employee may be opened and reviewed before submitting
  •       Electronic emails must be emailed from the university (Parchment or similar) to
  • Human Resource Services will review the transcript and post approved units on MyCUSD --> Certificated Transcripts

  • Transcripts may be submitted at any time during the year.
  • Units are reviewed and column advancement occur three times per year
  • Units completed by the last working day in September, and submitted no later than the last working day of October, will be credited retroactive to the first day of the school year.
  • Units completed after September 30th must be submitted no later than the last working day of January to be effective on February 1st.
  • Units completed after the last working day of January submitted before the last working day of April will be effective on May 1st.
  • All accepted units will be posted on MyCUSD --> Certificated Transcripts.
  • NOTE:  Units earned through Professional Learning are not automatically sent to Human Resource Services.  Hours earned through Professional Learning require a transcript request be sent to Professional Learning through their website.
