Fair Education Act
The FAIR Education Act, enacted in 2012, requires that California public schools provide fair, accurate, inclusive, and respectful representation of diverse ethnic and cultural populations in the K-12 history and social studies curriculum. For example, during History-Social Studies lessons in the 3rd and 4th grade, students learn about Harvey Milk, Charley Parkhurst, and other civil rights activists. To facilitate this learning, students may be provided the definition of “gay” and “lesbian.” In accordance with our teaching practices, staff do not elaborate on these definitions, share opinions, religious beliefs, or political stances. Students are referred to parents for more information or to answer questions. If there is a religious concern, per BP 6141.2, parents may seek an alternative assignment in advance.
